Burgess Powell owns Casco Cup, a USA owned menstrual cup company that makes everything in house. Their entire mission is to empower women with quality menstrual cups at factory direct prices. Burgess loves to educate and teach people how to use menstrual cups and loves working in the menstrual cup market.
Burgess was initially convinced by her Dad to start using a menstrual cup and has a hilarious story to go along with that.
What are menstrual cups? What are they made out of and how do we use them?
Menstrual cups are made out of medical grade silicone and are inserted into the vagina using various folds to catch menstrual flow.
Let’s talk through the steps of how to use a cup. What’s your favorite fold?
I like to boil my cup at the end of every cycle so it’s ready to go for next time. I always wash my hands before I insert it. I prefer the c-fold and I like to squat to insert my cup. It sits a little higher than a tampon and should be popped open just like it is when it isn’t inserted.
You have to go into using a menstrual cup like you did when you were 13 and your only choice if you wanted to go to the pool party was to figure out a tampon. You just have to have that same drive. We didn’t master tampons the first time, we didn’t figure out the correct absorbency the first time, we had to use them over and over again, sometimes for years before we really got good at them. It kills me when people try a cup once and say “It didn’t work great, I’m just going to go back to what I know.” You have to do it enough to get the hang of it.
I have yet to have anyone come back to me after using a cup successfully and say “I hate it.” Never once.
What does the process of creating a new product look like?
Product design is such a cool thing and it’s fun to have input!
What is the funniest question/scenario/etc when it comes to menstrual cups?
I’ve been asked if wearing a menstrual cup will stretch out your vagina and make sex less pleasureable? Vaginas are stretchy!
Transparent silicone can stain and people worry that it’s gone bad if it’s stained. It hasn’t, silicone just stains.
Some people have wondered if it can get sucked up in your body and it can’t. The vagina/cervix are the end of the vagina, there’s nowhere else for it to go!
